Questions and Data Notes

Quick answers about licensing and where our numbers come from.

Is a dog license required in every state?

Requirements are set locally in most places. Many counties and cities require eligible dogs to be licensed, so check with your local animal control or licensing office.

What does each state guide cover?

Every guide covers requirements, fees, renewal, forms, and a county guide, so you can find the right local office for your area.

Does this website issue dog licenses?

No. USA Dog License is an independent information website and is not affiliated with any government agency. Licenses are issued by your local authority.

Where do the numbers come from?

Population is from U.S. Census Bureau July 1, 2025 estimates. Dog counts are approximate 2016 benchmarks based on American Pet Products Association data. County counts follow U.S. Census geographic definitions.

Are the dog numbers the licensed dogs in each state?

No. They are approximate historical estimates, not current licensing or registration totals.

Why does Puerto Rico's dog number look different?

A comparable state-level dog count table doesn't include Puerto Rico, so we use an approximate midpoint of 725,000. Recent unofficial estimates range from 600,000 to 850,000.
